Exotic forest, lush vegetation.
Ribeiro Bonito – natural sanctuary.
The trail starts at the Water Treatment Station in Quebradas in São Jorge and ends at the same location, over a distance of 5.1 km (+ 5.1 km return), with a duration of 3h and 30m (round trip) , at an altitude between 710m and 530m.
This route goes along Levada do Rei and initially crosses an exotic forest area combined with specimens of indigenous vegetation. In this initial zone it is possible to observe the beautiful agricultural and panoramic landscapes of São Jorge and Santana. From half the route, the levada that runs along the slope, from the interior of the island, crosses an area of well-developed natural forest and rich in natural biodiversity.
The tunnels formed by the lush vegetation and the great variety of existing species, as well as the presence of the beautiful levada, are good examples of the natural, built and cultural heritage of the island.
The abundance of clear water in this area is a very important factor for the existence of a high biodiversity, the vegetation is abundant and diverse, and the animal species are also very frequent and varied. In this place, tree species such as Til (Ocotea foetens), Laurel (Laurus novocanariensis), Vinhático (Persea indica) and animal species such as Bis-bis (Regulus ignicapillus maderensis), Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs maderensis) can be observed.
After covering part of the route, the hiker arrives at Ribeiro Bonito, finishing the first part and being able to rest before returning, inviting complete rest. Ribeiro Bonito is considered a natural sanctuary due to the extreme beauty of the place, covered by vegetation that characterizes one of the indigenous Forests of Madeira, the most dense and exuberant - the Laurissilva Forest - reaching its maximum exponent, for its location, isolation and abundance of Water.
On the way back, you will go through the same route and you will be able to appreciate the beauty of the area even more calmly.
