Michelle Singleton | Hotel Manager

From the views out of her office window, to her responsibilities at the tender pit, there are many aspects of Michelle's job that makes her feel like a proud ship mother.

One proud mum

Having a 'normal' 9:00 am - 5:00 pm job was never something Michelle had considered or wanted to do. She wanted a career that would bring excitement, adventure and the ability to travel, something she quickly realised following a period of time spent working shoreside in a hotel. Embarking upon a life at sea, Michelle has worked for some of the world’s most recognisable cruise ships, but after 20 years working for the big white cruise ships, Michelle was looking for something different. The opportunity to join Hurtigruten and MS Maud provided the chance to take her experiences in a new direction and she was very excited to come onboard.

One of the main reasons for wanting to join the crew onboard MS Maud was to experience more wildlife in some of the remote and beautiful parts of the world. Since joining in 2020, Michelle has been able to do just that. Whilst she takes great pride in ensuring guests have a memorable experience on board, the other highlight of her role is the view from her office. Situated next to the main reception, she has enjoyed views of the Northern Lights, breathtaking scenery, and unique wildlife all from her desk.

From the large liners to the smaller ships of MS Maud, Michelle has worked with an array of crews. Like most of the crew onboard, she likens it to one large family, celebrating birthdays, and anniversaries, and going above and beyond for our guests. This makes her feel like one proud Mum when she receives glowing compliments at the end of each voyage.

Top Tip | Seasickness

After many years at sea, Michelle has learnt a thing or two. One of her most asked questions is - How do you handle seasickness? Her top tip is apples and dry crackers, mix that with fresh air and you will be able to handle those slightly choppy waters.

Guest Story | Tender's in Fishguard

Upon arriving in Fishguard the ship was met with choppy waters and a guest was scared of going on the tenders. Michelle was in the Tender Pit and was approached by the guest for reassurance and to ask her to join for added support. Going above and beyond, Michelle joined the boat ride, and as a sign of thanks and immense gratitude, she was asked to join the guests for dinner.

Favourite Destination | Everywhere!

Following an illustrious career at sea, there are few places in the world that Michelle hasn't visited onboard a ship. As what could be described as a true sign of wanderlust, she has no favourite destination. Each port offers something different to discover and experience and as such she finds it hard to pick one that stands out.
