Your excursion begins at the pier where you will board comfortable, air-conditioned transportation and, accompanied by a knowledgeable guide, set off through the Nicaraguan landscape. Sit back and enjoy the verdant landscapes and interesting explanations of the ‘Land of Lakes and Volcanoes’.
The Cerro Negro Volcano is located in northwestern Nicaragua, about 15 miles northeast of León. It is an active, 2,388-foot cinder cone volcano situated in the Maribios Volcanic Chain, which runs northwest to southeast through Nicaragua. Formed in 1850, it is one of the youngest volcanoes in Central America. Its name, which means ‘Black Hill’, could not be more appropriate. Constant volcanic activity has covered its slopes with black volcanic sand, which makes it nearly impossible for vegetation to grow there. It looms on the horizon in stark contrast to its surroundings.
After a two-hour drive, you will arrive to the volcano’s base. The volcano is only 2388 ft high and the ascent is part of the adventure. There is a natural path along a rim that leads you to the top of the volcano. It takes about one hour to ascend to the top.
The reward for your efforts are the superb views of the entire volcanic chain.
The spectacular descent through the black slopes of Cerro Negro’s will take between 30 to 45 minutes.
Back at the base, you will enjoy a well-deserved snack.
On the way back, enjoy a short stop at Chinandega, which means ‘place surrounded by cane.’ In Chinandega, you can visit the main church in the middle of the city.
After Chinandega, return to the port with a great memories of a full day of adventure.
