Scapa Flow was a vital natural harbor and home to the British Fleet during the Great War and the World War II. Enjoy panoramic views across the water to the smaller South Isles of Orkney.

We will drive over the first of the Churchill Barriers, man-made causeways that now link some of the isles. They were originally commissioned during the World War II to protect Scapa Flow from enemy invasion.

A large work force built the Churchill Barriers, including Italian prisoners of war who were interned in Orkney. Along with their work on the Churchill Barriers, the Italian POWs also built a tiny chapel. The tour includes a visit to the beautiful, hand-painted Italian Chapel, resourcefully built out of scavenged construction materials. The chapel is a memorial to peace but also to the resilience, ingenuity, and skill of the prisoners.

Return to Kirkwall and pause outside the beautiful 12th-century St. Magnus Cathedral, built by the Vikings during their 700-year rule over the islands. Known as the ‘Light of the North’, this grand red and yellow sandstone building dominates the center of Kirkwall and was built by Earl Rognvald in memory of his uncle, St. Magnus.
