Channel your inner explorer as you hike in the foothills of Spain’s tallest mountain, Mount Teide.
  • Hike in the foothills of Mount Teide at a leisurely pace, from Montaña Blancato to El Portillo.

  • Learn about the 1799 expedition that brought explorer Alexander von Humboldt to this volcano.

  • See La Fortaleza, the Orotava valley and parts of the Anaga mountains from El Portillo.

Step into the shoes of 18th century explorer Alexander von Humboldt, the Prussian naturalist who climbed Mount Teide in 1799. Today, you’ll traverse the foothills of this active volcano. Starting at Montaña Blanca, you’ll climb along a gravel road, stopping at El Portillo for stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. Descend through the Cañadas and head to a local restaurant for tapas and wine.

  • Remarks/requirements: For this route it is essential to wear hiking shoes, because the walk is over rocks with a rough surface. Walk at high altitude (over 6,562 ft)  

  • Walking information:  moderate hiking trail; approximately 3.5 hours; 660 ft up, 1,640 ft down; approximately 8 mi
