The one-hour drive from the port to the Makasutu Cultural Forest starts at 8:30 a.m. Makasutu is a palm forest situated on the banks of a beautiful, meandering tributary of the Gambia River (Mandina Bolong) encompassing different ecosystems that include dense forests, savanna, and mangroves. These environments are home to hundreds of varieties of birds, three species of monkeys, monitor lizards, pygmy deer, and mongooses, just to name a few. If you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of migrating baboons that make the forest their home for a number of months each year.

Upon arriving at Makasutu, you can enjoy a tea, coffee, or other refreshment. A small talk will be given before the forest walk.

Many different activities are offered during the day, including river trips on traditional dugout canoes or small boats (RIBs), guided walks through the forest, birdwatching, and animal observation.

First, you will take a trip down the river on dugout canoes or small boats (RIBs). While drifting on the water, you can see wildlife, fishermen, and women collecting oysters from the mangroves. This activity is very relaxing and features wonderful views of the region.

After the boat trip, you will have the chance to take a bush walk to see some flora and fauna, plus a chance to see some of the animals we mentioned above.

Then, it’s time for the drive back to base camp for refreshments before heading back to the Banjul Port.
