Where It All Started
1896. The Arctic. The Beginning of Expedition Cruising. It began with one voyage. Aboard the SS Lofoten, captained by polar pioneer Otto Sverdrup, we charted a course from Hammerfest to Svalbard—a route no one had sailed before to see the Arctic as few ever had.
These first expeditions laid the foundation for what HX stands for today: curiosity-driven adventure, grounded in expertise and Norwegian resilience.
Our early guests landed on the Arctic’s icy shores, studied wildlife, and navigated waters still barely known. Expedition travel was born—not for comfort seekers, but for those who wanted to understand the world by getting right into the heart of it.
