Antarctica Expedition - FAQs
Clothing and Equipment
What type of clothing is provided, what winter clothes should we bring, and what shoes should we pack?
You’ll receive an HX expedition jacket, which is windproof and water-resistant but not built for warmth. We recommend packing layers, including thin wool base layers. Waterproof trousers/pants are essential for excursions—without them, you may not be allowed on a zodiac. You only need to bring shoes to wear on the ship and during excursions in South America. A thick down jacket can be sufficient, depending on your warmth preference, but it doesn’t need to be bulky.
Will we receive a jacket onboard?
Yes! We’re excited to announce that all guests traveling to Antarctica in 2024/25 will receive our brand-new, high-quality blue expedition jacket. At HX, we are committed to protecting the remote areas we explore for future generations. This wind- and water-resistant jacket is made from recycled materials, with a reduced carbon footprint of 7.12 kg CO2e and crafted with sustainable practices, including an Ecovadis Sustainability Rating of Platinum (top 1%). It’s available in sizes XS to XXXL.
Do we need waterproof trousers, and what gear should we bring?
Yes, you’ll need waterproof trousers. Additionally, it’s important to bring warm layers of clothing with you. Waterproof trousers are essential; without them, you may not be allowed on a zodiac.
What kind of shoes do you recommend?
Muck boots are mandatory for nature landings in Antarctica and are loaned to all passengers for free. Rubber boots (similar to Muck boots, with a rubber bottom and neoprene upper) are provided and available in sizes 32-50 EU (1-15 UK and 1.5-15.5 US). We have different types of boots, including the ones for wide calves. Should you prefer, you can bring your own; however, please note that the requirement is that the sole and lower part of the boot must be rubber boots/wellies. These boots are mandatory and will go through biosecurity cleaning and a biocide dip when leaving and returning to the ship. Also, remember to pack shoes to wear on the ship.
Can you recommend brands for waterproof gloves or trousers?
We recommend Helly Hansen (remember to use your online HX Explorers discount code if you are a member of our loyalty programme) or other companies that offer high-quality ski gloves and waterproof trousers. More information can be found here: | HX Hurtigruten Expeditions UK
Do I need hiking boots?
Yes, you’ll need hiking boots if you’re visiting the Falkland Islands or if your voyage includes stops in South America. However, if you're on an Antarctic-only voyage, hiking boots are not necessary, as muck boots are provided for use in Antarctica. You can also use the muck boots in the Falklands, so bringing your own hiking boots is optional.

Due to visiting remote locations where medical services can be limited, especially in polar regions - it’s essential for us to know about any health issues. For more detailed information on this topic, click here.

Guests, including children - should submit their signed Medical Screening Forms 4 to 8 weeks before departure to allow Vikand Medical sufficient time to review them. You can submit your form earlier but be aware that this may delay your screening results. Doctor’s signatures are valid for 6 months, so if your medical condition changes closer to the sailing date - please inform us, as you may need to resubmit your forms. For more detailed information on this topic, click here.
What should I do if I fail the medical screening?
Only around 0.1% of our guests fail the medical screening. Please reach out to [email protected] for more information.

This promise is valid for new bookings on Antarctica cruises departing from October 1st, 2024.
