Where is Fort William?
Fort William is located in the county of Inverness-shire in Western Scotland. This charming town can be found at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain!
What to see in Fort William?
The Scottish Highlands are quite a peaceful area for rest and reflection. But if you crave activity and new experiences, there is plenty to see and do near Fort William.
Jacobite Steam Train (AKA the ‘Harry Potter Train’)
An absolute must-see for Potter-Heads around the world. The Jacobite Steam Train is most famous for featuring in the Harry Potter films as the Hogwarts Express. If you have time, you can even book a trip on the train to feel like a true student of Hogwarts!
Even for muggles, this is a magical sight to behold. You can get a great view of the train from Glenfinnan Viaduct, but be prepared for a boatload of fellow tourists.
Ben Nevis Holiday Park
Ben Nevis is the crowning glory of Fort William - the tallest mountain in all of Britain. This is ideal for visitors who love a challenge - it is a very popular spot for walkers and climbers, but also for people looking to capture a photo of the view from the top. Just don’t forget your hiking boots - it takes around 8 hours to climb there and back!
Old Inverlochy Castle
Fancy a bit of medieval history? Old Inverlochy Castle is a formidable fortress that was built by the Comyns in the 1200s. Of all of Fort William’s outdoor attractions, this might be the most impressive, having survived the test of two battles (with the scars to prove it). With its ruined foundations and gothic charm, you can feel what it was like to have been in the heart of battle.
Steall Waterfall
Nature at its most impressive. Take a walk to Steall Falls from Glen Nevis Car Park, and be rewarded with a beautiful view of this striking waterfall. Brave the rocky walk up to Nevis Gorge and you can get an up close and personal look of the falls - which scale up to an incredible 394 feet!
Fort William is known as the Outdoor Capital of the UK, and it’s easy to see why! With a Hurtigruten cruise to the British Isles, you can discover all of the beauty and magic that the Scottish Highlands has to offer.
