Our ambition is to be the most sustainable expedition company in the world and this report is an expression of our commitment both in the industry-leading transparency that it represents and in the actual results we have delivered over the past year. We have some way to go but we continue to make substantial progress with each passing year, and we’re proud to be on the right track – a fact that has been formally recognised by our industry-best ranking in Sustainalytics’ 2023 rankings.
In Summary, We’re on the Right Track!
Emissions
In 2023, we have:
Reduced our Scope 1 CO₂ emissions per available cruise night by 18% compared to 2022
Reduced our NOx and SOx emissions by 51% and 47% respectively – when released, these gases contribute to acid rain
Nature
20% decrease in overall waste which, due to an increase in sailings in 2023, translates to a 30% decrease in waste per available guest night
22% decrease in food waste per guest
26% guest nights were green stays – the room is not serviced, saving water and we provide a donation to the foundation in lieu of cleaning
1887 cruise nights donated to onboard scientists
People
Increase in women in senior leadership on-land from 29% to 41%
Increase in women in senior leadership positions on sea
First Cadets graduating into full-time officer positions, only two years after establishing the programme
Community
Launched our first community-first itinerary in West Africa; this included the construction of teachers’ accommodation at a local school, 11 community visits and the use of local chefs aboard
84% ports supplying some local food and beverages to our ships
Foundation
We are immensely grateful to our guests for their contribution in making 2023 a record-breaking year for donations to Hurtigruten Foundation. It total, they donated 830,682 euros, a 127% increase from 2022. Their enthusiastic support enabled us to fund 71 projects across 16 countries, resulting in unprecedented impact from the organisations striving to bring positive change to the regions we visit.
This has contributed to projects such as:
Checking shorebirds for Microplastics in Alaska
Studying Threats from Heavy Metals to the Waved Albatross of the Galapagos Islands
Investigating Humpback Whale population health in Antarctica
Protecting Coral Reefs in Panama Through Local Stewardship
Removing Hazardous Waste from Abandoned Whaling Stations on South Georgia
